Hawks Go Rallying - Racing Too!
We have had
a busy and varied programme again this year. The rally element has become more
varied and was well supported. The Yarmouth/Beaulieu Rally in mid-June was a
great success, aided by perfect weather. About 12 boats took part, mostly
families and couples. We were made most, welcome once again by Royal Solent YC.
There was a
cruise to Parkstone YC as well, with seven boats, and Keyhaven SC were our hosts
for lunch on Day 1 of the Nationals. Next year there is
rumour of a rally to
Weymouth! The racing has seen a smaller but competitive fleet with many of the
more recent helms becoming a lot more accomplished. During the season Dave
Miller won the H20 Trophy and the Priory Photos Cup, John Lilley won the
Boathouse Cup, Steve Ayling
the Reid Cup, myself the Olympic Cup and Slades Estate Agents Cup, Rollo Reid
the Single Handed Tankard, Sally Lewis the Lady Helm, Rom Meager the Last Chance
Cup, and Jonathan Tooley his first Hawk trophy, the Autumn Series Accipter Cup.
PERFECT FOR
NATIONALS
The
2006 Hawk Nationals were held in almost perfect sailing conditions for much of
the event. Friday's Passage Race saw brilliant sunshine and an f4/5.
The first
race to Keyhaven was won by Dave Miller in 'Merlin' with Rollo Reid in 'Tosser'
2nd and Mike Devall in 'Tomahawk' 3rd. The afternoon pursuit race, under
spinnaker most of the way, was won by David and Marion Bell by 2 feet! from the
Alexander family.,
Saturday's
racing consisted of 3 Olympic races towards the main National Trophy. Again it
was hot sun and a South Easterly force 4. There was a great tussle at the front
of the fleet between Nick Ponsford, from Chichester, in 'Cushions' and Neil
Stevenson, from Keyhaven, in 'Harris', with Stevenson edging Ponsford for the
points on that day. The Alexander family and John Lilley, both from
Christchurch, fought it out for third place.
Sunday was
very hot with lighter variable winds from the South. Again Ponsford and
Stevenson battled it out for first place. Neil Stevenson hung on to retain the
trophy for the second year running.
John'The
Pink' Lilley secured third and was the 1st local boat home in front of the
Alexanders and Steve Ayling in 'Skyehawk'. The Mad Engineer Trophy was won by
the well known Mudeford Sailors Nick and Gillian Geary. Most Improved Helm
Trophy went to David & Sonya Dullaway.
The racing
showed once again what a splendid dayboat racer/cruiser the Hawk is with close
racing, crewed and helmed by a variety of people from experienced racing helms
to families who recently started. The whole event went very smoothly thanks to
Peter Reid's organisation.
