Rally to Island Harbour, Isle of Wight weekend 22nd / 23rd June 2019.

Dear CSC Ralliers,

For those who have not been here before, here are some general instructions for entering / exiting the marina, (please ignore if you have!)

You will need to lock into the marina and access is normally restricted to 4 hrs either side of high water, although most shallow draft Christchurch boats should be able to extend this if required. The main restriction is the depth of water just outside the lock entrance, so if you are thinking of entering close to low water, it is best to check with the Marina Office beforehand who will be able to advise what depth is available.

Island Harbour Marina Tel 01983 539 994or VHF Channel 80.

High water on Saturday 22nd is at 15.40 and there will be 'freeflow' in from approx. 14.00 - 16.00.

Lock opening times: 08.00 – 21.00 hrs. (Other times are possible by prior arrangement).

When approaching Island Harbour, you will need to call the marina (Call sign: 'Island Harbour' on VHF 80, stating your boat name and that you want to enter. They will then advise as to what action to take. This applies even on freeflow, as one gate is kept shut for a public footpath. It is advisable to call up just as you pass the Folly Inn on the Medina, (port side) to give time them time to turn the lock around if required. If they are busy, you may have to wait outside until called or you can go onto a waiting pontoon if you prefer, (stbd side). Only enter when the traffic lights are green, (situated just below the white marina control tower). Put out fenders both sides and once in, the marina staff will hand you lines – no need to use your own. Unless busy, you usually go starboard side too. Watch out for any cross wind. After that, it is just like any other marina for berthing.

When leaving, the procedure is the same. You still need to call up on channel 80 before you leave, (even on freeflow) and they will call back advising you to slip lines and approach the lock gate. Again, look for the green traffic lights. If close to low water, it is advisable to give a reasonable amount of warning. It is advisable to pre-book locking out when you report in (or by phone) and the marina office will then call you on VHF 80 at the agreed time.

The cost will be £2.70 / metre / night (rally rate). No pre-payment has been made, so please pay at the marina office, stating that you are on the CSC rally.

Attached is a chart extract of the River Medina at the entrance. If approaching (or leaving) at low water it is advised that you keep as close as possible to the green conical starboard buoy just outside the entrance and then turn at right angles, for the most depth.

In the evening, the intention is to bar-b-que . The marina has a dedicated grassy area close to the showers / boat yard and we have reserved 3 kettle drum type charcoal bbq's for our use. (Traditional kettle drums, not gas). We will provide the charcoal and the marina staff will clean them afterwards. There are a few picnic benches but you will need to bring rugs / chairs . In order to get the BBQ's lit in time to use,we suggest that we have the pontoon party at the BBQ area – at 6.30 pm. (Unless someone volunteers to monitor the BBQ's?).

For other times, there is also a very good bistro called The Breeze (booking advisable). Tel 01983 533 388 . The Folly Inn is a short walk down river and you can also walk along the river into Newport (approx. 20 mins).

There is also a water taxi to Cowes, contact Dave and the Waterbus on 07974 864 627 VHF Ch-77.

We think that is all, but if you have any questions please contact us. Otherwise, we hope that you have a good passage and will look forward to seeing you all on Saturday.

Best wishes Paul and Sue (Take Five)
