On the water 12/6/2019

A mixed bag for the scow fleet this week. We had a good turn-out for Capers on Wednesday despite the less than ideal conditions, but lost Saturday's ODM race due to the 30mph wind. We will re-run the race at a later date. On Sunday, in excellent conditions (what a difference a day can make!), the Peter Warren Trophy pursuit race attracted a fleet of 12 boats with Shaun Harris winning the day.

Classes 4 & 5 also had a quiet week with cancelled racing on Saturday and I have no information on the sea inter-club on Sunday as I write.

The cruiser Spring series finished with a win for Marmite sealing the spring series in class 1 for Andy "Rover" Rushworth. The Class 3 race was won by Ray Hale in Discovery III but Matt Holloway in Jester with their 3 previous straight wins was enough to secure the crown. Overall 24 boats took part in the series.

Despite the poor weather, 8 boats managed to sail to Bucklers Hard at Beaulieu for the CSC Cruiser Rally last weekend. A meal for those there on Thursday (instead of a pontoon party) was hosted by Martyn & Lynne Bevan on their boat for 7 people on Thursday & on Friday, Hills & Martin Dancey surpassed Martyn & Lynne by providing a meal for 12 (+ 2 who came in time for dessert). The Saturday BBQ took place in dry weather with a blue sky and 34 members at which we celebrated June Cooke's 90th Birthday....Jane Russell took charge of the Aunt Sally Game along with Martin Spooner & Henry and not surprisingly (!?) the ladies won by 14 to 11..............

I omitted to mention a 5th sailor who's also travelled to the Finn World masters so my apologies to Richard Phillips.The following report is from their website::

"Former Finn World Master champions, Mike Maier, from Czech Republic, Vladimir Krutskikh, from Russia, along with Simon Percival, from Britain took the race wins on the opening day of the 2019 Finn World Masters in Skovshoved, Denmark.

The fleet is split into two groups and of the four group races scheduled, only three were completed in an unstable and shifty easterly breeze. It was a generally cloudy day with onshore winds that proved to be surprisingly shifty and unstable. It was a tough day for competitors and organisers.

Simon Percival said, "The breeze was very shifty. The first race was not so good for me with a black flag, but I made up for it in the second race and managed to get a win. It was quite tough downwind with lots of waves left over from the big swell from the breeze in the morning. But so far it is a great event. They are doing a great job and we are all having a great time."

Racing continues until Friday with a maximum of eight races scheduled."

This coming week has the RS Aero demos at Highcliffe Sailing Club on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th from 2pm - see their website for details. HSC is also organising their first Ladies Open meeting on Sat 15th June 6.30pm with 2 races. Entry is £5 and again all the details can be found on their website.

Our sailing program continues apace with capers, Hawks and ladies sailing this Weds, Junior and cruiser racing on Thurs, Pirates on Friday, and the dinghy Summer Series beginning this weekend, Let's hope the weather settles down with so much planned!
